Background of the Organization
The Sámi Education Institute organized an international reindeer husbandry training seminar in Inari from the 27th of June to the 1st of July in 2007, to which reindeer husbandry experts were invited from Northern areas including the Nordic countries, Russia and the United States (Alaska). The seminar was organized by the EU Interreg IIIA North programme as part of the 'Oktasaš boazodoallo-oahpahusaovddideapmi' - 'Sijd' project. The main objective of the seminar was an integrated professional reindeer husbandry training curriculum and to have it presented to and evaluated by international experts. Another main objective was to establish an international collaborative organisation in the reindeer husbandry areas of the Circumpolar North. The seminar was concluded with the signing of a cooperation agreement as well as the founding of an international cooperation organization.
In a conference held in Moscow on the 16th of March in 2008, the organisation was given the name BEBO which is an abbreviation of North Sámi 'Boazoealahusa boahtevuoda ovddas' meaning 'For the Future of Reindeer Husbandry'. During the Moscow conference, the organisation gained also new member organisations.
